CARING FOR YOUR SAGE AUBREY HANDBAG

1. Begin with a great leather protector

First things first, it’s important to protect your bag before taking it out for the first time. For our signature smooth calf leather, the first thing we recommend to our clients to do is to protect their bag with an appropriate leather cream. A calfskin grain should be cleaned with an appropriate leather cleanser and then protected and conditioned with cream. This will create a layer of protection over the leather and shield it from superficial scratches. If you haven’t done this step before, do it now!  When cleaning your leather bag always approach with caution, testing on an inconspicuous area of the bag first, and apply with a light hand - don’t be tempted to use force. Gently applying a cream will plump and protect the leather and minimize any existing superficial marks (like those from your fingernails).

2. Denim Stains

Denim stains occur when leather rubs against a pair of jeans (or indeed, a denim jacket). The dye used in denim is similar to hair dye. It penetrates fast and deep. The key to successfully cleaning denim stains at home is speed. The longer the mark is left on the leather, the better chance it has of becoming absorbed into the fibres. As soon as the dye has marked your leather the cleaner should be used to remove it from the surface.

3. Day to Day Care

Leather bags should be protected regularly to ensure a protective barrier continually coats the surface, repelling water, oils and other common substances that may come into contact with your bag. When removing dirt from day to day wear we recommend using handbag wipes. Make sure pens are capped and makeup is kept in makeup bags to avoid and spills or leaks.

4. Stiff or Sticky Zippers

Sometimes we can get a stiffer zipper. We have a quick simple fix for those stubborn zippers. You can take a CLEAR birthday cake candle and with caution and care run the wax candle across the teeth of the bag- make sure you don’t get the wax on the zipper fabric. After you have run the candle across the top of the zipper teeth- open the bag and run the wax candle across the teeth of the zipper on both sides again. Now zip close the bag and repeat step one and two until you have a smooth zip.
